Membership vs. Certification
There has been a lot of confusion about the difference between USATF membership and officials’ certification.
membership requires a yearly renewal (or a multi-year membership) and gives you the
benefits associated with all that USATF membership gives you.
As we are being certified by USATF, the officials committee requires all officials be current members to show support
for the organization which provides the benefits the certification prods.
Certification is for a four year period between Olympiads.
The current certification period begins in November 2008 and will
conclude at the completion of the 2012 Olympics.”

How do the Certification Levels work?
Officials are all initially given the first level of certification, Association, and
then, if qualified, may progress to higher and more responsible levels.
Click here for more information on the progression.
National Uniform
The National Officials Committee is requiring that all officials at national meets wear the official USATF Officials Shirt (for both indoor and outdoor).
We are NOT considering requiring the National uniform at our association meets at this
time; however, wearing the shirt would distinguish you as a USATF official and bring great recognition to your
work as an official.
The national uniform is:
National certification photo ID
National uniform polo (shirt tucked in)
Khaki pants, shorts or skirt
Belt (required) khaki or brown
White shoes and socks
No hats indoor
Blue blazers indoor use ONLY if facility is cold.
National uniform jackets or navy blue jacket/windbreaker Outdoor
Starters - indoor and outdoor- red sleeves to be used. Red blazers for TV only.
Note: If lapel pins are worn, they should be limited to the USATF or NCAA pin or any related
meet pin provided by meet management
If you have not purchased the National Uniform Polo yet, please follow this link for more information. There may be a change in the national uniform shirt in the near future. I will keep track of this and post any changes here. In addition, there is now a fanny pack that will hold your rulebook, sunglasses, cell phone, etc., which can be purchased. Raingear (which is not required) can also be purchased – click here for information.
Opinion Forum on the USATF Officials website
At the direction of the current national officials’ committee officers, an “opinion forum” has been added
to the officials’ website.
I would recommend that all officials read the opinions in the opinion forum and make your own
decisions. If you feel strongly, I suggest that you voice your opinion to our national officers.
In addition, I recommend that you use the Discussion Forum for discussing these issues.
National Meet Selection
To be eligible for selection, official must be at the national or master level to receive an application to apply. If you have never worked a national level meet, I would encourage you to apply.
The experience is one that you will enjoy, especially meeting and working with officials from around the country. If you aren’t a national or master level official; I encourage you to look into up-grading (if you are eligible).
