Dear USATF- Mid Atlantic Clubs and Runners of all ages,
Please join us at Belmont Plateau Park (Philadelphia) to celebrate and race on Sunday, August 30th. All are invited to a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate and open up the New Signage and maintenance that has been done to the Belmont Plateau Cross Country Courses. The City of Phila Dept. of Parks and Recreation (JIm Marino), Fairmount Park Conservancy (Catherine Ott) and under the guidance of Dave Thomas (USATF- Mid Atlantic member and Head XC Coach at Philadelphia U) has updated the cross country courses with new course marking posts, mile posts, and directional signage for 3 of the most popular XC courses (3k, 5k, 8k). There will also be a new identification sign for Belmont Plateau Cross Country with clearly defined maps of the courses and an area to post schedules and results. New course maintenance will update some areas of the course with safer footing. USATF- Mid Atlantic sponsored the work by having Bill Belville re measure all the courses and updated them with new measured mapping of 1k-8k courses. This work of new signage is one of the few public courses in the country that offers cross country course markings and plans are in the future to recruit more championship races to our famed iconic Cross Course here in Philadelphia.
On August 30, there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9am . City of Philadelphia officials (and possibly Mayor Nutter) will be on hand with local TV media, and a few former Olympians to help kick off the day. The Ceremony will be followed by a youth (under 12) 1 mile outside loop Race and a 5,000 meter Cross Country Race on the famed Belmont Plateau Cross Country Course. Music, refreshments and Race Awards will be available. There will be a TEAM competition also (3 score for a team). The race is sanctioned by USATF and Mid Atlantic officials will oversee the race. The 5,000 meter will start at 10am . Race day signup starting at 7:30 am.
The day will also mark the announcement of the plans to unveil a Belmont Plateau Cross Country Hall of Fame. Belmont Plateau Park has been one of the major venues for Cross Country racing since the early 1960s and has even served as host of the National Championships in 1976. It has the reputation as one of the toughest XC courses in the country and most runners has challenged the course at least once in their career. Many championship teams, Olympians and National level runners have competed at Belmont. To honor the past athletes, teams, officials and coaches who have competed there, a Belmont Plateau Cross Country Hall of Fame is being established and formed. Dave Thomas is in the process of establishing the BPCCHOF and will make an announcement on August 30th on the future plans for the Hall of Fame.
We encourage all USATF-Mid Atlantic runners (young and old) to join us at Belmont Plateau Park on Sunday, Aug 30 to help celebrate the new course markings, and also to open the XC season up with a race at Belmont Plateau. The race will serve as a fund raiser for future Belmont Plateau course maintenance. A race flyer with race details is attached. Online registration and details on www.gopacsports.com

The USATF Foundation is encouraging youth track clubs and programs to apply for its first round of 2014 youth grants. The foundation favors the use of grant money to expand existing youth programs/clubs, provide additional competitive opportunities for children and enhance the experience for all participants. Preference is given to clubs based in low-income areas, and programs with a history of solid financial management, multiple funding sources and community support. Allowable expenses include equipment, uniforms, meet fees, travel, facility rental, staff and volunteer training, and outreach. For more information, read the press release. You can fill out a grant application at www.usatffoundation.org.
A new set of maps has been created for the cross-country courses run at the Belmont Plateau. The courses include 2K, 3K (two versions), 4K, 5K and 8K races.
